CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY MANUFACTURER REPLACES METAL FUEL TANK WITH PLASTIC AND CUTS COSTS BY 62%

Rotational Molder Designs Complex Shape In One Piece to Fit Odd Pocket

Saddle Brook, NJ: Landscape and construction machinery manufacturer Finn Corporation, Fairfield, Ohio, replaced the fabricated steel fuel tank on its T90 HydroSeederR with a rotationally molded plastic fuel tank and cut costs by 62% while reducing weight, adding longevity and upgrading safety. and molding firm Meese Orbitron Dunne Co., Saddle Brook, New Jersey, the new, plastic fuel tank features a complex, one-piece design shaped to fit into a triangular pocket inside the grass seeding and mulching machine. By designing the new tank in the cheese wedge shape, MOD engineers enabled Finn to cut costs without altering its machines while also ensuring that machines in the field may be historically retrofit, if necessary or desired by the customer.

To ease and speed assembly, MOD engineers molded in inserts to secure a U-shaped channel along the entire length of the tank. These inserts permitted the MOD tank and U-shaped channel to be slid into the machine and secured with only two bolts, eliminating the need for welding entirely. Boasting a seamless, cross-linked polyethylene design, the durable MOD tank eliminates the joints, seals, solders and welds that invite corrosion and rust and weaken fabricated metal fuel tank assemblies. The potential for dangerous leaks and spills is virtually eliminated.

"We originally set out to build a stronger, safer tank as a customer service," says Jeffrey Reichert, operations manager for Finn Corp, "The fact that we now have a stronger, safer tank that also assembles faster and costs significantly less is just fantastic."
